Judas Priest, Phantom Of The Opera?
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: Judas Priest Create A Metal Concept Album To Be Released in 2007
Topic: Heavy Metal
Some people believe he had foreseen the rise of Hitler, the Kennedy assassinations and the terror strikes of 9/11, but it's safe to say that 16th-century French prophet Nostradamus never saw this one coming: Nearly 450 years after his death, heavy-metal icons Judas Priest are writing a concept album about the legendary soothsayer.

The bandmembers, who have been working on their ambitious undertaking for more than three months, have already written 90-plus minutes of music. After they massage the tracks into final form, add solos and write lyrics, the band will choose a co-producer and begin recording. Priest hope to finish the project by the end of the year in time to release it in the first quarter of 2007.

Like a Puccini opera, the piece will flow seamlessly, with no breaks between tracks, but frontman Rob Halford said clearly identifiable songs will address approximately 20 key moments in the life of the man born Michel de Nostredame. Touch-points will likely include the writing of his famous 1,000 quatrains, the death of his first wife and children from plague, his second marriage, his brief imprisonment and his death.

"Nostradamus is all about metal, isn't he?" Halford said. "He was an alchemist as well as a seer -- a person of extraordinary talent. He had an amazing life that was full of trial and tribulation and joy and sorrow. He's a very human character and a world-famous individual. You can take his name and translate it into any language and everybody knows about him, and that's important because we're dealing with a worldwide audience."

In addition to digging new lyrical ground for Judas Priest, the album will contain musical elements that might surprise their fans. "It's going to have a lot of depth," the singer explained. "There'll be a lot of symphonic elements. We might orchestrate it, without it being overblown. There may be a massive choir at parts and keyboards will be featured more prominently, whereas they've always been in the background before."

At the same time, Halford insisted the group won't abandon its heavy roots. For every atmospheric keyboard or choral arrangement, there'll be a headbanging passage to rattle the roof. "Essentially, Priest will always present ourselves as a metal band, so it will still be the band you know and love," Halford said. "There are some monster metal riffs that could span the Grand Canyon, and we still always find it a kick to come up with something that just burns out your speakers."

Halford discovered Nostradamus as a teenager and immediately became interested in his vague predictions and the way his followers interpreted them to pinpoint specific historical events. But it was the band's manager, Bill Curbishley, who predicted a concept record about Nostradamus could be a magical move.

Curbishley, who had previously worked with the Who on their rock opera Tommy, brought his idea to Priest in Estonia at the end of their 2005 tour. He viewed the extravaganza as a way to follow up the tremendous buzz of their comeback album Angel of Retribution, the first Priest record in 14 years to feature Halford.

"He was sitting there going, 'Well, what do the guys do next?' and this is what he came up with," said Halford. "The challenge of going into the studio to do a follow-up on a great studio album is immense anyway, and Priest are constantly trying to achieve and go one step further, so when Bill brought this up, we were all like, 'Let's go. Let's do it.' "

The yet-untitled LP will be Judas Priest's first concept effort and the first release they'll perform in its entirety on tour. Halford is convinced the material and narrative are sufficiently compelling to keep fans from missing the cavalcade of hits they've grown used to.

"The songs are going to be great," he said. "If you know anything about Priest, you know that we've made the characters come to life in songs like 'Painkiller,' 'The Sentinel' and 'The Sinner,' and now we're just taking that storytelling side of Priest that people love and cherish and putting all into a single project so it all comes to life in one dimension."

While they haven't yet worked out the details, Judas Priest plan to deliver their Nostradamus saga in a theatrical environment complete with intricate stage sets, special effects and possibly live actors. "We'll use the great things you see in Vegas and that are going in theater and put that into Priest along with pyro and everything else," Halford said.

"It will be like a heavy-metal 'Phantom of the Opera' -- a nonstop flow of great music, and I'll be doing more costume changes than Cher."

Axl Gets In Trouble Again
Mood:  hungry
Topic: Heavy Metal
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Axl Rose spent most of the day in a Stockholm jail cell after allegedly biting a security guard in the leg at his hotel, police said.

The Guns N' Roses frontman was arrested early Tuesday after attacking and threatening the guard and causing damage to the Berns Hotel, where the alleged scuffle took place, police spokeswoman Towe Hagg said.

Rose was released from jail that evening, after he admitted to the charges and agreed to pay a fine of $5,500, Hagg said.

The 44-year-old rocker was also ordered to pay $1,360 in damages to the security guard, she said.

Catarina Oscarsson, a spokeswoman for concert organizer Ema Telstar, said the band wasn't traveling with a publicist and would not comment on the arrest.

Hagg told The Associated Press that Rose was drunk during the confrontation and was not questioned by police until after he had sobered up.

"He was deemed too intoxicated to be questioned right away," she said.

It was unclear what caused the fight, but Swedish tabloids said the guard tried to intervene when Rose started arguing with a woman in the hotel lobby.

Police officer Fredrik Nylen was quoted by the daily Aftonbladet Web site as saying Rose acted aggressively toward police and had to be handcuffed and restrained in the hotel.

"He kept a high profile, so to speak," Nylen, one of the police officers who helped arrest Rose, was quoted as saying.

Guns N' Roses played a concert in Stockholm's Globe Arena on Monday night, and had been partying at a well-known nightclub before the scuffle, Aftonbladet said.

The band was scheduled to perform in Oslo, Norway, on Wednesday night.

In May, Rose and fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger capped an evening out at a new club called The Plumm in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood with midnight fisticuffs.

The scuffle reportedly started after Rose moved the drink of Hilfiger's girlfriend. According to Rose, Hilfiger, 55, smacked him in the arm and told him to put the drink back.

Rose was at the club to play a surprise set for "Rent" actress Rosario Dawson for her 27th birthday party.

He did perform, and dedicated the song "You're Crazy" to "my good friend Tommy Hilfiger."

Aerosmith & The Crue Team Up

This is the BIG ONE…”ROUTE OF ALL EVIL TOUR.”

AEROSMITH--America’s Greatest Rock’ N’ Roll Band--will return to the road September 14 with M?TLEY CR?E--America’s Most Notorious Rock Band--to spawn what is the ultimate must-see rock event of 2006: a massive North American tour of predominantly outdoor amphitheatres. Bigger, louder, faster, and harder than what rock fans have experienced before, the tour gets underway in Holmdel, NJ and lasts through November 24 in West Palm Beach, FL. With each band featuring all their original members, this marks the first time that rock’s bad boys have embarked on a tour together.

The first few dates of the Live Nation-produced tour--Camden, NJ, Boston, Washington, Tinley Park, IL, East Troy, WI and Detroit--go on sale June 24. Two more shows (Holmdel, NJ and Jones Beach, NY) go up June 26. Other on-sale information is TBA.

For the tour, AEROSMITH--STEVEN TYLER, JOE PERRY, BRAD WHITFORD, TOM HAMILTON and JOEY KRAMER--will thrust themselves into the middle of the audience, turning the seats along the 70-foot-long ramp into one big front row experience that will enable fans to get up close and personal with rock’s quintessential live act. AEROSMITH were most recently on the road with their hugely successful and wildly acclaimed “Rockin’ The Joint” tour, which packed arenas from October ’05 through February ’06 in what critics called “an exultant return,” “a wet, wild and totally sweat-filled night” and “a testosterone-charged set of their patented blues-soaked rock.”

Coming off one of the most successful tours of 2005, M?TLEY CR?E is bringing a whole new bag of tricks out this year, with massive production and pyro, determined to out-do themselves in the decadent M?tley fashion. Major surprises are in store from the world’s most infamous rock band. “As comebacks go, this one is monstrous,” Rolling Stone said of their wildly successful Red, White & Crue tour, and this year proves to be even bigger.

About Aerosmith:
For more than 30 years, AEROSMITH has defined American Rock 'n' Roll. Just a brief overview of their remarkable career is truly mind-boggling: over 100 million albums sold, induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, countless awards (4 Grammy Awards, 8 American Music Awards, 6 Billboard Awards, and 12 MTV Awards), and a diehard “Blue Army” fan-base numbering in the millions worldwide. The members of Aerosmith remain creatively vital, and are the platinum standard for artistic and commercial success in the music business. Through it all they have defeated the odds, silenced their critics and have undeniably withstood the test of time. The most convenient way for fan club members to buy tickets and access tour information is through the AF1 web site, www.aeroforceone.com . AF1 members can purchase a variety of fan experience packages that include tickets, backstage tours, pre-concert parties with prizes, and exclusive AF1 memorabilia.

About M?tley Cr?e:
Rock's most notorious bad boys, M?TLEY CR?E, have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, documented their quintessentially decadent lifestyle in their best-selling 2001 autobiography and soon-to-be feature film, The Dirt, and had one of the top-grossing tours of 2005, with all four original members reuniting to play before an estimated one million people in the U.S. Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx first joined forces in 1981, their albums generating such iconic singles as "Smokin' in the Boys Room," "Girls Girls Girls," "Dr. Feelgood" and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)." As one of the most indulgent bands in history, their reckless lifestyle eventually took its toll, and they disbanded in 1999. With their reunion six years later, M?tley Cr?e released the double-platinum Red, White & Cr?e and spent most of 2005 on the road for their "Carnival of Sins" tour. An Update: CC Deville & Poison
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: Courtesy of desmoinesregister.com
Topic: Hair Metal
Good thing prototypical hair-metal band Poison decided to hit the road to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Guitarist C.C. DeVille, who lost his driver's license last year and is fresh out of rehab, can hitch a ride on the tour bus all summer long.

"I'm pretty much growin' up when it comes to driving fast," he said last week from Los Angeles. "I had some awful accidents."

DeVille (real name Bruce Anthony Johannesson), 44, and the rest of Poison -- lead singer Bret Michaels, bassist Bobby Dall and drummer Rikki Rockett -- will headline the third annual Waterstock Rock on Saturday at Water Works Park.

Michaels and his solo band performed at last year's Waterstock.

Perhaps it's only fitting, then, that the original lineup of the "Nothin' But a Good Time" band returns for what is looking disturbingly like an annual fixture event in Des Moines, a tribute to the aerosol-enhanced era of glammed-up Sunset Strip rock before Seattle grunge wiped the slate clean.

Organizer Willie Glosser predicts a crowd of more than 7,000 Saturday. Long-discussed plans for a full-blown concert series based on Waterstock haven't materialized, but other promoters will follow this summer with their own fests in the same park: the Big Country Bash on June 25 and Summer Jam on July 23.

DeVille, meanwhile, was on display most recently in the low-rent VH1 reality TV show "The Surreal Life" -- "one of the best things" he's ever done, according to the lovably loony guitarist.

"I had just come out of rehab and it put me through tests," DeVille said. "It took the alcohol and all the excuses out of the quotient."

He describes himself as an addictive personality with no "off switch" who today does need more than a good time.

"I have a very big spiritual place in my life now," DeVille confessed. "I don't like to label any religion, but I do believe that I'm put on this Earth for a reason. You have free will, but the goal is to do God's will as opposed to your own will, and sometimes my own will is easier but it's never right."

When God talks to DeVille, he doesn't talk dirty. It's subtle.

In the guitarist's always-colorful parlance, God is "that little voice that you hear in your head that says, 'I know you didn't get charged for that carton of eggs, but just tell the checkout guy that he missed it.' "

More wisdom from this hair metal survivor:

Q: Are you going to get glammed up for the stage this summer, the makeup and everything?
A: When I was younger and I put the makeup on I might be able to pass for an ugly girl. Now I just look like Phyllis Diller. ... Makeup honestly in retrospect probably was never a good idea. But as you get older it becomes very obvious that it is not a good idea at all if you're a man. ... Maybe a face-lift, maybe go to the gym. Stay off the makeup, take it from me.

Q: Can you believe that Poison has lasted 20 years?
A: If I knew I was gonna be alive this long, I woulda took better care of myself. Honestly, I had no idea that Poison would be still going. It really is a miracle. ... I've been clean and sober now for nine months.

Q: So can you behave on tour this summer?
A: I think where it's scary is after the show when you have this false exaltation, where it's four guys in the band and it's really a celebration about the music, and it's a celebration about the music being a soundtrack to other people's lives. It's not that they love us, it's that they remember who they were dating, their first car or whatever when they hear our songs. So we get this false sense of almost supernatural things. And if you're not careful, you stumble into that and then you do feel like you don't want to let go of that moment.

Q: How are your guitar chops these days?
A: My playing is really, really good this year because I got my license taken away and I can't drive for 12 months. ... The byproduct of that is the guitar has since become a very good friend of mine.

Q: How are you and Bret getting along?
A: With 20 years comes a lot of maturity as well as getting healthier, and we're realizing that the dynamic of Bret and I is really a major catalyst for what Poison is.

Black Crowes Album Found
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: A "lost & forgotten Black Crowes album found.
Topic: Blues
According to legend, David Bowie was so out of it in the mid-Seventies that he can’t remember anything that happened in the year 1975. He did however, release Station to Station, which means that he now is one up on the Black Crowes, who were too stoned to remember that they recorded an entire record in 1993. The album, named Tall (the title is jazz slang for, um, getting high) will now finally see the light of day in a two-disc Rhino package called The Lost Crowes this August. Also included in the set will be songs from 1997 album named Band which the Crowes in fact remember recording, but just never got around to releasing.

Def Leppard Video On Web, VH1
Mood:  blue
Topic: Hair Metal
Def Leppard fans, get ready to rock on -- on your television screen and on the Web.

Beginning Friday, the video for "ROCK ON" the first single from Def Leppard's brand-new release, YEAH!, can be watched right here at DefLeppard.com. And on Monday, the video goes into regular TV rotation on VH1 in the U.S.

"ROCK ON" is a classic radio smash originally done by David Essex in 1973, when Def Leppard was just a bunch of young lads in England starting to learn about music. It's the perfect introduction to YEAH!, a 14-song collection of glam-rock covers that serves as a long-awaited tribute to Def Leppard's hard-rock heroes. And the video, directed by award-winning filmmaker Nigel Dick, puts the proper spin on the song, giving it a fresh, harder-edged veneer.

Captured in the desert climes of Placerita Canyon outside Los Angeles, it envisions the band getting ready to play a post-apocalyptic stage, with grit, grime and nothing but guitars, drums and the spirit of rock to guide them. In other words, "ROCK ON" are great words to live by.

"We're really pleased how that came out," guitarist and vocalist Phil Collen says. "It was fantastic. It's Mad Max meets something nasty and gritty and fancy and dusty. It's very iconic and we just love the way it turned out."

The band members love the way the album turned out, too. Songs from the Kinks, Badfinger, Marc Bolan and T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Free, the Faces, Blondie and Thin Lizzy are all represented, and while some songs are straight-up, faithful-to-the-note reproductions of these classics, some have been reworked in the trademark Def Leppard style.

"ROCK ON" is definitely one of the latter. "The end section is just absolute, typical Def Leppard guitars and vocals, just sort of putting our little feel on it," bassist and vocalist Rick "Sav" Savage adds. "It made it sound like a Def Leppard song. And we even played it live on the last tour. By the end of the tour, it ended up being one of the highlights of the show because everybody kind of knew the song anyway and it was like we'd transformed it and given it our own identity."

Collen didn't hesitate to name "ROCK ON" as his favorite track on the album, too. "The interesting thing about that song is that it's our tribute to Queen, if you like," Collen says. "We didn't do a Queen song for very definite reasons. We didn't want to do Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Stones or the Beatles. That was just a no-no for us because it was way too obvious. So we did 'ROCK ON' and we just gave it a Queen-type treatment. In doing so, it actually sounds like it could have been on HYSTERIA or something."

Izzy Takes GN'R Stage Yet Again
Mood:  party time!
Now Playing: Only days after fans leave gig becuase of no-show Axl, Stradlin returns to stage to perform three songs.
Topic: Hair Metal
Axl and Izzy put their differences behind them at Donington

Guns N'Roses' singer Axl Rose was reunited with estranged guitarist Izzy Stradlin as Download drew to a close tonight (June 11).

And heavy metal's legends of Sunset Strip closed the Donington festival in a typically chaotic style.

Midway through the set, Rose introduced original member Stradlin for three songs, 'Patience', 'Night Train' and 'I Used To Love Her'.

It was only Stradlin's second show back with the band in over a decade, following a shock appearance in New York last month.

But that was not the only surprise instore; for 'My Michelle', the band were joined by former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach.

Guns N'Roses took the stage half an hour early, but Rose easily made up the time in a series of sensational walk-offs.

After slipping over during 'Sweet Child O'Mine', Rose annnounced that the band were experiencing "technical difficulties" and left the stage for five minutes while a guitarist played an instrumental version of 'Don't Cry'.

The singer had already abandoned the show once before, leaving the crowd with an instrumental version of Christina Aguilera's hit 'Beautiful'. And he threatened to leave the stage after 'Better' if the crowd persisted in throwing bottles.

However, they did get to air 'new' songs 'Better', 'The Blues', 'IRS' and 'Madagascar'.

Perhaps referencing this weekend's Nokia Isle Of Wight festival, Rose dubbed the site "the Isle Of Wrong" before 'Sweet Child O' Mine'.

Guns n' Roses played:

'Welcome To The Jungle'
'It's So Easy'
'Mr Brownstone'
'Live and Let Die'
'Knockin'On Heaven's Door'
'Sweet Child O' Mine'
'You Could Be Mine'
'Beautiful' (instrumental)
'Better'
'Out To Get Me'
'The Blues'
'November Rain'
'My Michelle' (with Sebastian Bach)
'Patience' (with Izzy Stradlin)
'Night Train' (with Izzy Stradlin)
'Madagascar'
'Rocket Queen'
'IRS'
'I Used To Love Her' (with Izzy Stradlin)
'Paradise City'

Elsewhere at Download, second stage headliners The Prodigy narrowly avoided a crowd incident as hordes of fans climbed the lighting rig onn what was only their second-ever show back in their original line-up, after headlining Isle Of Wight on Friday.

Finnish Eurovision winners Lordi also played today, alongside Welsh hardcore heroes Funeral For A Friend and Bullet For My Valentine.

Closing the biggest ever Download, organiser Stuart Galbraith confirmed that the festival had sold out for the first time in its history, and that it would return next year, June 8-10.

As well as sister festivals in Dublin and San Francisco, he also revealed plans for a Download festival in Boston.

Axl Rose Gets Oxygen During Shows
Mood:  chatty
Now Playing: Axl Rose needs extra oxygen during shows.
Topic: Hard Rock
Entertainmentwise.com reports: Axl Rose has reportedly needed the use of an oxygen mask between each song during Guns N' Roses recent tour dates.

According to reports in local newspapers in Budapest the 44 year old singer apparently had to run off stage to use the mask in the bands dressing room at a recent gig in Hungary.

The concert, as with the bands recent London gig, was held up by Rose for several hours because he reported wanted to make sure that only his own special oxygen mask was connected to the tanks.

The Sun reports that an ambulance was also on standby in case of any problems with Rose?s breathing and technicians in the band's entourage have admitted that he would have got through the lengthy European tour without the oxygen.
